Welcome to the FIRSTWA Forums!

This forum is where FIRST participants, particularly new teams, can ask questions and find help for their problems when building and programming their robots. There are areas for FRC, FTC, and FLL teams alike.

The FRC 'Ask a Veteran' forum will provide the content for a GoToWebinars scheduled by veteran teams throughout the build season. After a certain number of unanswered questions posted here (most likely about 5), a Webinar answering them will be setup soon thereafter.

The management of the forums is provided by the Titan Robotics Club. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email us here: web [at] titanrobotics.net. Thanks!

Bumpers

The instructions for the bumpers call for angle aluminum on the edges.  Is this required?  I test glued my fabric to a piece of plywood with Goop and am unable to pull it off with my bare  hands.  I then glued and stapled the fabric on my bumper.  It's pretty tight.

Re: Bumpers

Yes.  The inspectors will probably be pretty nit-picky on the bumpers this year, since FIRST placed so much emphasis on them.  You need to build them exactly as the rules specify.  Good luck!

Re: Bumpers

I have to disagree on this one. The bumper diagrams in the manual are simply guidelines. We didnt put the metal last time and they did not care, but of course things change from year to year and inspector to inspector.

Note that the instructions in the manual are not guidelines, but actually specify rather specifically how to construct bumpers; because they are meant to protect the robots and the field FIRST is fairly picky. Also, considering they're outside of the robot weight limits, they're fairly limiting on how you make your bumpers. But yes, there may be some variation between inspectors. In general, they probably won't mind so much if you leave something like this off; you're more likely to get cited if add things to them or use different materials.
