FIRSTWA.ORG is a non-profit-all-volunteer organization that administers FIRST programs in the state of Washington. FIRST provides a framework and competitions for after school activities promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). FIRSTWA supports all FIRST programs in Washington; Jr.FLL, FLL, FTC, and FRC, as well as other technology based team sports.
Like most non-profits, we are constantly raising funds to keep the programs going. Popularity of FIRST and the associated rapid growth have caused our expenses to increase dramatically in the last few years. In 2008-2009 we experienced 50% growth in FLL, 121% growth in FTC, and 88% growth in FRC. FIRSTWA serves almost 5000 students in the state, brought over 80,000 volunteer hours into our schools, and helped provide nearly 390,000 hours of supervised STEM activities. FIRSTWA accomplishes all of this on a small budget, usually less than $30,000 per fiscal year. All of those funds come from our local community; individuals, corporations, and foundations.
